Leutelmonte, the Lord of Valtenesi

Tyrant or hero? The lord of the Rocca di Manerba who challenged Brescia and conquered a legend.

At the outset of the 12ᵗʰ century, between the silences of the castles and the clashes of arms, one name was on everyone’s lips. Leutelmonte.
Born in Esine, in Valcamonica, he had seized the Rocca di Manerba with cunning and strength, making it the beating heart of his rule. From there, he reigned over the entire Valtenesi as an unelected but feared and revered ruler. Tributes ended up in his hands, laws bore his signature. And those who tried to hinder him rarely survived.
The neighbouring feudal lords considered him more dangerous as an enemy than valuable as an ally. Leutelmonte was known for his brutality in battle but also for his ability to command respect and awe.

One day, however, something happened that changed his image forever: he freed the young Engarda, daughter of the lord of Brescia Ardiccio degli Aimoni, held captive by the cruel lord of Breno. He took her with him to the Rocca, winning the gratitude of Ardiccio and the admiration of the people.
From that moment on, Leutelmonte was seen only not as a ruler but as a hero.
Solitary and shy, he rarely left his castle. When he did, it was to head down to the deserted beach or to sail the waters of the lake, perhaps in search of peace.

But his fate was written in the fire of feudal struggles. At the height of tensions between the Valvassori, he decided to openly challenge the city of Brescia. With over 7,000 men by his side and the support of faithful comrades Giraldo and Mazzucco, he marched decisively towards the city. But Ardiccio’s troops lay in wait. And there, under the walls of Brescia, Leutelmonte met his death.
His life – comprised of conquests, heroism and contradictions – inspired two historical novels by Lorenzo Erculiani in the following centuries: “Valvassori Bresciani” and “Leutelmonte”.

A character who still hovers like a fascinating shadow on the stones of the Rocca, between myth, history and legend.
