The Nature surrounds you.
Thanks to its biodiversity and its strategic position, Manerba is part of a Natural Reserve. A perfect mix beetween the lake ecosystem and the terrestrial one.
Natural Reserve of Rocca, Sasso and Lacuale Park of Manerba del Garda.
La Rocca di Manerba, with an unmistakable profile that stands out over southern Lake Garda, has now acquired new strength to remain true to its identity in the future.
A recent achievement that will support a programme of study and awareness, preservation and dissemination of an area that is unique in its history and biodiversity – just as beautiful as the more well-known Italian gems.
The Natural Reserve of Rocca and Sasso: a treasure of natural and human history, an open-air museum that tells the story of the landscape, nature and history of a unique territory.
In order to preserve and enhance the area’s nature and landscape, in addition to its historical and archaeological characteristics, the Municipality of Manerba del Garda has in fact promoted a series of initiatives that have led to the inclusion of this area (114 hectares of dry meadows, woods, trails, vineyards and olive groves) in the “Natural Reserve of Rocca, Sasso and Lacuale Park of Manerba del Garda”.
To protect and preserve the ecosystem, prohibitions and restrictions of activities that are incompatible with a natural reserve have been laid down, for example hunting, expansions of already existing buildings, the use of motor vehicles and other actions that could affect and harm the natural, scenic, historical and archaeological features of the entire concerned area. These prohibitions and restrictions, for the most part already in the previous PLIS Regulation, are aimed at studying and monitoring the Reserve’s endemic species as well as its historical and archaeological wealth, the results of which will be disseminated to enrich scientific research and expand knowledge of the Lake Garda area with its immense cultural and tourism potential.
Lacuale Park in Manerba del Garda: the first operation in Italy for the study, enhancement and protection of the lake environment and the fish fauna of the largest lake in Italy.
It is an extremely rare safeguarded area in Europe and unique to Italy, and extends the typical protection of coastal areas to the lacustrine environment in order to preserve the biodiversity of both the water and the land. Lacuale Park in Manerba del Garda includes 84 hectares of water surface surrounding the Rocca’s headland and the Sasso of Manerba, including between Porto Dusano and Pisenze, where less stringent measures are envisaged for the water as compared to the land in order to enable the population census of the fish species present. The lake side of the park can only be approached by sailing and row boats. Recreational fishing is prohibited, and even professional fishing is completely prohibited in Zone A of the integral reserve which is only open to authorised access. In doing so the lake’s fish are maintained and monitored, also preserving a highly interesting scuba diving site.
Just like the Park’s land is studied, the environmental protection of the lake is also aimed at scientific study and dissemination, to pass on the ecosystem and the knowledge of it to future generations.
The Archaeological Museum of Valtenesi, located within the Reserve, is the information centre for visitors to the territory of Manerba who wish to read up on the reasons why people chose – from the earliest prehistoric times up to the occupation of the medieval fortification to which the place owes its name “Rocca” – to visit and settle in this wonderful location of considerable environmental value with its protruding position towering over the hinterland and the lower lake waters.
“Ander”: a south-westerly wind that blows from Rivoltella to Padenghe, at times from Fornaci to Rocca of Manerba. It is a constant wind that rises in the early afternoon and lasts for several hours. It mainly affects the south of the Lake and sometimes it affects the north too.
“Pèler”: blows about 12 hours a day and covers most of the lake. In stable weather, it blows from 2-3 a.m to 11 a.m or noon and is slightly stronger towards the eastern shore.
“Ora”: a southern permanent wind, from the PO plain after Pèler dropping, generally blows from 1 p.m to sunset. In summer, it is stronger and usually doesn’t affect the south of the lake.
“Vinessa”: it often happens that, when the sky darkens between Garda and Peschiera ( the east/southeast of the lake ), due to the Bora arrival and meteo disturbance. It causes high waves which can be very dangerous.
“Vènt de mut”: this wind often blows, generally on the western shore, when the lake is quiet, in the summer.
“Vent de Tèp”: in summertime, when dark cloudscover the sky at the southern end of the lak, very dangerous winds are likely to blow up, extremely intense ones that create a hazard for all types of boat. They last from 20 to 60 minutes or so.
These are by no means all of the winds that blow on the lake, just some of the main ones.
